How to ace your ICBC written driving knowledge test

By reading this article, you must be excited about driving your brand-new car. But before you can hit the road, all drivers must pass a driving test. Depending on where you are, national driving exams vary in what coverage they’re going to test or how long you’ll be doing them. For example, you’ll have to pass the ICBC exam in British Columbia, Canada.

It would help if you were well-prepared before taking this knowledge test ICBC. As you should know, the actual road test for ICBC is entirely separate from the written one. Therefore, before you can even hit the road to get supervised by a trained expert, you should first pass this crucial exam.

But worry not, for the proper preparations will give you a solid chance of passing and even acing it. We have placed a few markers in detail on how to ace this test piece by piece to have a growing impression and gain confidence in your road test, which will be inevitable.

Let’s start.

Test composition

Knowledge Test ICBCThe test will comprise different types. There will be 50 multiple-choice questions to be completed in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. At first, this may look not very comforting, having to complete an exam at a swift pace. However, you should note that you don’t need to schedule any appointments and fit quotas time-wise to take the exam. You can go to the testing center (or online under these circumstances) at least 2 hours before the facility closes to ensure a spot in any ICBC center.

Coverage of the exam

Expect questions that cover road signs, rules and regulations, and safe driving tips. These types of information are rampant online; some even require common knowledge to get those rights. We’ll discuss more on preparing for these types of questions in the latter parts of this article.

Passing rate

Takers must at least score 40 out of the 50 multiple-choice questions. That means you must get 80% of your questions correct to proceed with the next phase of acquiring your license.

Comprehension

If you fear the English language, you should release a long sigh of relief because the test can be taken in different languages. Specifically, there are only 11 languages you can choose from, and any of them should be no problem for you as a Canadian. If you still need more clarity in some questions, you can also ask the staff to clarify them. So this test should not be intimidating to you by any means.

Also, if you are one of those who can’t concentrate with noise in the background, you can elect to wear headphones provided by the staff in the ICBC center to maximize your comfort and focus as you take the exam.

So these are the things you need to know before preparation. Now let’s teach you how to prepare for the exam to come out near a perfect score.

The Learn to Drive Smart Manual

The first step to acing that test is to have a copy of the Learn to Drive Smart Manual. This can be done by downloading online, buying a copy from any ICBC driver licensing office, or downloading an app in the play store or app store. For your reference, click this link: https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/Documents/driver-full.pdf

Furthermore, the manual has nine chapters for you to go through, and all chapters are equally important to each other that you need to cover throughout your study session. Therefore, from road signs to safe driving, you should at least review them at equal intervals.

A great tip to remember technical things easily is to check the bottom corner of each page or chapter. There is usually a summary explaining the full content of that particular page. Then, highlight or jot down the content in your notebook to remember them.

Review Schedule

The best way to ace any test, whether the SATs or this ICBC exam, is to have a routine schedule that you MUST religiously follow. Our brains work in a habit format. The moment we wake up, our brains lead us to do things we usually do daily. So, for instance, if the first knee-jerk reaction you’ll do when waking up is checking your phone, then your brain will mimic this and try to give you an impulse every day.

The same thing applies when reviewing. Always stick to a religious schedule. It doesn’t matter when you’ll study; the important thing is to check the most suitable and comfortable hours. We recommend, at the very most, 4 hours a day in the afternoon or the evening. That way, you can expect your brain to stick to that schedule, so you’ll indeed review for the exam at an incredible pace.

Practice, practice, and practice!

There is no disputing the fact that the best way to be great at something is through repetition. So download practice tests online so you’ll get used to the flow of the actual exam once you’re taking it.

Also, don’t go for only one website to practice on. Try multiple websites and materials to be ready for any questions shown to you.

Lastly, be honest while taking your practice runs. It’s no help to you if you cheat your way into practice. You might as well not do them in the first place. Look at your mistakes and evaluate which chapters to go back to improve on further practice tests.

Additional Tips

  • When outdoors, observe the roads and the signs you see. This will help with the immersion of learning the road instead of sitting on your desk at home scrolling pages of texts. This way, you can be familiar with the pictures and context of the signs you see to understand the concepts better.
  • Some words in the knowledge test ICBC can be very new to you. The best way to avoid confusion and guessing is to improve your technical vocabulary about driving. Review websites that will improve this, and internalize rather than memorize them.

Final thoughts

The ICBC exam comprises two parts: the written and the road test. Before we get into the final step, let’s prepare to ace the first one. A man named Benjamin Franklin once said: By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” So always be wise in your review so the process will be smooth until the finish line.

Read all the chapters and finish your practice tests with integrity. Then, when you are on the final question on the actual knowledge test ICBC, you’ll feel confident in acing it. Your dream to drive your car is a fast approach.
